Lakewood is Changing
Joe Lobozzo of Lakewood High School near Cleveland, Ohio, teaches the course "Human Rights and Conflict,” based on a Facing History and Ourselves curriculum.
Watch Joe and his student bring their classroom exploration of identity and citizenship to life as they take to the streets with a video cam, and get their neighbors to open up in honest conversation about their changing town.
Through their class project and afterschool club, students gain the confidence and poise to be able to have thoughtful conversations about some of the toughest topics around: race, status, demographics, crime and housing, and their own discomforts.
"We try not to get too uncomfortable," a student leader says," but we let people know it's going to get uncomfortable." But Lobozzo concludes: “We can't not have these conversations. These are important conversations to have. Adults need to have these conversations, too.
