Albie Sachs, a white activist who opposed apartheid and was exiled from South Africa for 23 years, now serves as a judge on South Africa's Constitutional Court. While in exile, Sachs survived an assasination attempt. In this video clip from Facing the Truth, with Bill Moyers, Sachs talks about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Transcript:

MOYERS: Has the Truth Commission made a contribution to all of this?

SACHS: A huge contribution and what’s been so extraordinary is very deep emotions have come out, and no one can deny the horrors of the past. Maybe one of the worst things about horrors is denial, that they didn’t even happen, and the people know it happened. They know it happened, and yet the others say it never happened. No one can say it never happened now.
