New England - Facing History and Ourselves will be soliciting submissions for two companion exhibitions that will take place during the Choosing to Participate exhibition, on display at the Boston Public Library from January to May 2008. Upstanders: Portraits of Courage and pARTicipation: Young Artists Speak Up offer two unique opportunities for the people of New England to be a part of this community wide initiative.
Choosing to Participate is a multifaceted educational and civic initiative that challenges audiences to think deeply about what democracy means-and what it asks of each of us. Upstanders asks community members to look at the people in their lives and write an essay, story, or poem that explains how an individual or group is making a difference in their community or around the world. pARTicipation encourages students from throughout New England to produce original artwork, in traditional and new media formats, that reflect their feelings about community, responsibility, empathy, and respect.
Information on how to participate in Upstanders and pARTicipation, as well examples of former recipients, are available at www.choosingtoparticipate.org. For more information please call Facing History at 617-735-1688.
Facing History and Ourselves is an educational and professional development organization based in Brookline, MA, whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.
