Story of Modern-Day Slavery Serialized in Memphis

Memphis, TN - In fall 2005, Facing History and Ourselves partnered with the Assisi Foundation and the Commercial Appeal's Newspaper in Education (NIE) Program to present a serialization of Holocaust survivor and poet Sonia Weitz's I Promised I Would Tell in the Commerical Appeal newspaper. The serialization, which was used by hundreds of middle and high school classrooms, helped to promote literacy and was honored with a major regional newspaper award.

As a result of this award-winning colloboration, Facing History and Ourselves, NIE, and MidSouth Reads present a second Commercial Appeal serialization beginning in January 2007 that features Francis Bok's Escape from Slavery. Bok, who has spoken at various Facing History events, is a former child slave from Sudan. Today, Francis Bok works on behalf of the American Anti-Slavery Group, as an anti-slavery and human rights activist.
