We are proud to announce the 2007 Margot Stern
Strom Chicago Area Teaching Award recipients. In its inaugural year in
Chicago, the award, named after the organization's founder and
executive director Margot Stern Strom, honors outstanding educators of
Facing History and Ourselves and supports those educators in the
implementation of projects related to the work of Facing History.
Educators in the Chicago area from public and private schools who work
with children in grades 6-12 and who have taken at least one Facing
History and Ourselves seminar, workshop, or online course were eligible
to apply for funding up to $3,000.
This year's recipients are:
Meg Arbeiter: ACT Charter School, 12th grade Humanities
Meg will travel to South Africa to examine the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission, build a framework for ongoing online conversations between
Facing History students in South Africa and those at ACT Charter
School, and create a book project for her students on the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission.
Nikoletta Antonakos: Deerfield High School, 9th-12th grade Social Studies.
Niki will establish a permanent resource library to develop a Facing
History American Studies course that builds the courage required to
