Mahatma Gandhi: Soul Force

Mahatma Gandhi led a lifelong search for social peace and political non-violence. Committed to dialogue across classes, cultures and faiths, his life and politics stand testimony to a remarkable civic life, which valued restraint, tolerance and transparency above all else. This book historicizes his earnest and provocative writings-on the bomb, Zionism and Palestine, the partition of India-showing his ideas maturing over time into a unique model of public action.

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring

She had been a biologist for the federal government when she first took note of the effects of the unregulated use of pesticides and herbicides, especially DDT. Magazines refused to publish her articles because they were afraid of losing advertising. When Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1963, she was viciously attacked, called "an ignorant and hysterical woman." Her warning sparked a revolution in environmental policy.
