R.A.D. Students, Lakewood HS

Race and Diversity Club
Getting people to talk openly and honestly about race and how it affects our lives isn’t easy– but that is the goal of the R.A.D. (Race and Diversity) student club. Its members organize events and discussions centered on racial identity in Lakewood. They put together biweekly topic-driven meetings, Black History Month events, Spoken Word Nights, and Essay Contests, and participate in volunteer activities around the community.
Encouraged by their constructive discussions, some R.A.D. students traveled through their school and neighborhood with cameras and engaged community members about their perspectives on race and difference. They learned that through their conversations, they can play an active role in shaping community perceptions and ultimately inspire change.
