Joyce DeLaney

Joyce DeLaney has done many wonderful things for Kaiser at Redwood City. She was the manager of the Operating Room, which means she had to keep track of how many people were there, monitor all supplies, and more. One day there weren’t enough people to help the surgeons with the operations, which gave Joyce an idea. She made a proposal to the government to set up a Surgical Technician Program for people on government assistance, especially women on welfare. She wanted people to have the opportunity to be self-sufficient and independent. Joyce’s idea turned out to be a “win-win” situation for both the hospital and the government, since the hospital would have more people to help the surgeons and the government would have fewer people who depend on public assistance. I admire Joyce’s work, and she has inspired me to be more creative in finding ways to solve problems. She has showed me that determination and consideration of other people’s welfare can create a lasting contribution to our society.
