Artist's Statement: The loss of family can leave the survivor in a deep abyss of depression. The woman in the picture is the sole survivor of her family. Learning about the Rwandan genocide had a very startling impact on me. I was disturbed knowing that people of my own race were killing one another, and no one was doing anything about it.
