Little things make a big difference- just opening a door for a stranger or giving someone a compliment works. If everyone did little things like that the world would be a better place.

Below, you can read reflections from others who have addressed the following questions:
Think about a time when you have been in a situation where you had a chance to participate either positively or negatively. What choice did you make? Thinking about it now, what would you do differently? We encourage you to read these stories and share your own reflection.

Little things can make a big difference- they lead to the domino effect: when someone sees someone else doing a nice thing and joins in the kindness.

Racism and hate crimes are a big problem. I chose not to discriminate against others. Maybe my choice can have an impact on others.

Last year a new kid came to our school that nobody talked to. I started talking to him and soon after others followed.

I saw my friends picking on the ‘not popular’ kids in my class and I told them to cut it out. I couldn’t believe it actually worked.

Should I be her friend or not? One day, while I was at a friend’s house, her brother had just received a $20 dollar bill. But somehow it went missing; I thought he had lost it. Then we went out to CVS and, while we were waiting at the door for her parents to pick us up, her brother mentioned that maybe I had taken it since they knew my family is not in their best money condition right now. When he said that, at first, my friend was just thinking, Then a moment later, she accused me of doing it, in a joking way. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard that. How could she blame me? Just like that? I still can’t believe she said that, even if she might be joking. Then, in the car, she suggested to her brother that it might be under the keyboard of the computer. When we got home, first thing he did was look under the keyboard. And guess what? There it was. They didn’t say a word about it after that. Not even an “I’m sorry”. And that day I arrived home crying. As I told my mother, she wanted to call her parents to talk to them about such a rude behavior, but I wouldn’t let her. Still we are friends till this day.

When i first came to united states i was very happy because i could finally see my father that left me in brazil with my mom for 4 years. When i steped out side of the airport i felt the cold brezze because it was snowing a lot. In a few hoursi was in a car with my dad's friend. After few hours i came down the car and i saw my dad,he was looking different. He was a little bit taller and older. After i meat my uncle that was with my dad he told me every thing about Framingahm, where i was going to live. Then few days later my dad put me on a school named Potter Road School. My first day of school therew was horrable because teachers were talking iin English with me and i was very shy to ask other people what she was saying. So i left her talking alone. In my second day of school i meat some good friends who help me with the work and translated stuff that the teachers was saying and etc... By the end of the year, i learned a little bit of English., and started to read on my own with no help from friends. It was a little bit difficult. In the last day of school in 4th grade i met some american kids and we became friends. Sometimes they had a hard time to try to understand what wha i was trying to say. Now few years have passed and my English keep getting better than before. Now im on 8th grade living in united states for 5 years. The End

It was a hot summer day. I was playing basketball with my cousin when we heard barking from huge pitbulls. Usually when we hear dogs barking that loud it means that there is a fight going on. I told my cousin to stay and I went to see what was going on. When I finally got there I saw two high school students fighting. There were a lot of people watching. I was a bystander because i did not stop the fight or tell an adult to try to stop it. Later on my friend told me that an upstander had stopped the fight.I wish that person was me.

Once when I was younger I found 10 bucks at the side walk. Then I saw a little girl crying because she lost 10 bucks. I was thinking about giving the money back, but I didn't. Her mother was realy rude and tought the little girl's older brother took it away, she said that when they get home she would check the boy's stuff. I was wearing my public school uniform and they were from a private school. My brother and my cousin told me to give the money back, but I didn't want her mother to call me a thief, so I kept the money to myself. I felt sorry for the little girl but last year I did the right thing. I found 2 bucks at the cafeteria, but instead of keeping the money to myself, I gave it to an adult, so he could find who lost the money.Middle School StudentFramingham, MA

I remembered it like it was just yesterday. I was in the fourth grade in the middle of the school year. There was this new student that just came from Springfield. He look like a shy kid but hey who isn't if they just came to a new school. So people made fun of him and called him names so i got so mad. So it was the third period of the day and he was in it. I went up to him and i talked to him it was the frist time I saw him smile after that we became best friends. After that he told me that was the best time he ever had at school

A time when I was a bystander was one day me and some of my friends were coming from lunch and we were all kind of excited that day so then oe my friends says lets block these two kids way and by that he ment kind of bullying them and I just know that the 2 kids felt really bad and the next day then even told a teacher and we got in trouble and i also dont blame them for telling either. My bad choisce was when I agread to participate in the blocking of people`s ways. And something I would do differently is next time I would definitely not participating in one these so called jokes that harm others.

One day in 7th grade, I made a decision that has haunted me ever since. My two friends that don't get along too well were arguing. I asked them to either do it elsewhere or not at all. They continued without taking my suggestion into thought. One of my friends insulted the other with harsh words that deeply enraged me. I began to yell at him, a whole lot. Afterwards, I felt better, but as soon as I remembered what I said, I felt ashamed. What had taken over me? Yes, I did something about his insult, but I should have solved the problem in a calmer, smarter way. Althought I apologized to my friend, I still feel horrible inside. From then on, I promised myself that if a situation like that ever occured again, I would control myself and handle the situation like an actual human being would.

One day, over the summer, I made a positive choice. I was at my dad's house in Florida, when my family and I heard about a neighbor that was going through some hard times. She was having heart problems and had to move soon. My family and I wanted to help her, but we didn't know what to do. We each decided to do one thing to help that we were good at. My dad mowed her lawn, so that it would look good for the open house. My stepmother cooked her some heart healthy meals to get her through the week. I decided to volunteer my time to our neighbor. Over the week, I helped her pack stuff into boxes, clean her house and run errands with her. During one errand, she started to feel very dizzy and like she couldn't sit-up anymore. We were already driving, so she stopped at her doctor's office. We waited for a while and I was very frightened. The doctor talked to my neighbor for a while and said that she was okay to drive home but had to lie down as soon as she got there. After that we helped her even more. It felt good to be there in someone's time of need.Middle School StudentFramingham, MA

One time when i was in elementary school everyone was at recess. Some of the kids started making fun of another kid who talked funny because he had a lisp. I had talked to him before and he seemed nice. No one stood up for him, which was sad. Now that I look back on that moment I wished that I had stood up for him beacuse it wasn't his fault that he had a lisp. If I could go back to that time I would tell the other kids that it's not right to make fun of people just because they're different.

I remember an awful story during my first year in middle school. One boy i didn't know until that year was a very rude boy to me and the teachers. He always picked on me and disrepected the teachers. One day during gym class he was trying to make a basket but accidentally tripped on his shoelace and fell on his face. Everyone including me started laughing at him. At the time I didn't realize how my actions affected him. Now two years later he doesn't talk to me nor disrespect the teachers just because of that incident. From this day on I can still remember the hurt on his face. I regret laughing at him even though he made fun of me i know i shouldn't have done the same

a long time ago a bunch of my friends and i were just hanging around and they all started to smoke and get high. i didnt know why they were doing it. its not like they looked cool or anything. so i just stood there and watched. when i went home i thought about how they were all telling me to do it with them. so the next day, i walked out on them because life is too short, and i dont want to enjoy it by smoking or getting high and kill my lungs. so i never talked to them again.
